London Underground
Internet
Since the beginning
of June 2012 passengers using several major London
Underground stations have been able to access
wireless Internet broadband thanks to a new initiative
by Virgin Media. At the time of writing no fewer
than 72 stations have access to the service, and
this number is expected to rise to about 120 by
the end of the year.
For the duration
of the 2012 London Olympics the London Underground
Internet service was free to all users, however
the long-term plan is that only the portal containing
travel news and certain other titbits of useful
information will be free to all, and that the
general Internet connection will be charged other
than for certain existing Virgin Media customers.
Reports and reviews
are in almost unanimous agreement that the quality
of the service has been exceptionally good. Indeed
it has already been accessed by hundreds of thousands
of passengers and others using the key stations
where the London Underground Internet service
is currently operational. The intention of the
service is that it will provide uninterrupted
access for passengers and indeed all users whilst
they are at the station, or travelling overground
on the tube.
