Starting the Business: Dealing with Chinese wholesalers is seen by many to be very risky business, unless you are willing to travel to China, meet with your chosen suppliers, check them out, and make sure you aren’t getting yourself into a situation which will cost you thousands. To a certain degree, these worries are very real and it is still very important to do your homework on the suppliers you are looking to do business with.

Typically the amount you will need to start off with will be anywhere from £500-£1000 as Chinese suppliers deal in bulk so you need to order several hundred of whatever you are thinking of stocking. There is however a great benefit to ordering from China – the price. You will get most things at unbelievably cheap prices, everything is normally quoted in US Dollars and unless shipping is included it will simply be FOB (which stands for Free on Board – otherwise known as the cost to get it onto the ship, after which you have to pay for the actual shipping to the UK).

There is a temporary business alone just in requesting samples from lots of suppliers – most will send you one free sample (or sell it to you very cheap including postage) so you can assess if you like the product enough to base an order on it. Simply by getting lots of samples from a variety of suppliers (it really can be anything and everything that retails for a minimum of £50-£100 in the UK) you can make a relatively easy £1000+ profit just on reselling the samples. Obviously there isn’t much longevity in reselling samples – maybe a few months worth of revenue, however throughout that time you will no doubt find a great product that has a demand; and you can then look at placing an order for the minimum order quantity (MOQ) the Chinese supplier requires.

Once you take delivery of the products you will find that you have a huge profit margin available to you – there are many highly successful business men who have made fortunes importing goods from China and reselling them in the United Kingdom, most of these started out where you are just bringing over samples here and there to see what is popular. They then slowly scaled their businesses up to bringing over whole containers of items, holding stock of them at a storage unit and reselling them for a large profit each time.
