The
age-old question – is there water is on
the moon - could be answered on Friday 9th October
2009, when Nasa 'bombs' its surface, causing a
huge plume of lunar dust that will be viewed by
millions worldwide over the internet. Astronomers
in various parts of the world may be able to view
the impact through a high-powered telescope; but
for everyone else, the crash will be broadcast
live on the NASA website. Further images should
then also be made available of the lunar dust
cloud. The mission was thought up by the NASA
office that has been working on a plan that will
cost in excess of $50 billion to eventually return
astronauts to the moon again. The two ships on
target for the moon that will bomb its surface
will hit the moon at approximately 5,600mph. The
explosion will have the force of 1.5 tons of TNT
and throw over 350,000 kilograms of lunar dirt
out of the crater it hits.
