Work
From Home?
Whilst you probably could work from home for
this business in the early days just reselling
the samples, such is the quantity of goods you
will be bringing over when you place your first
larger order, it probably wouldn’t be
sensible trying to run this operation from your
home.
If
you didn’t want to get a business premise
then simply employ a fulfilment company –
this is a warehouse that will take delivery
of the stock on your behalf direct from China,
hold it in their warehouse and send it out to
your customers for a small fee per order.
It
makes great sense it you still wish to work
from home, as then you only require your internet
and computer if your mains sales channels are
based online and you don’t have customers
needing to visit your premises to buy the products
(ie. you sell your imported products via websites,
eBay, etc)
Worked
Example:
Find a supplier of radio controlled toys (for
example) using one of the resource directories
above. Do your research into the company (find
them on other directories, how long have they
been a member for, are there any reviews, etc).
If
all checks out okay, request a sample of a range
of their products (making sure the email you
send is professional) – get them for trade
price or sometimes free. They will be shipped
over to you in the UK, check out the quality
of them, try selling them on eBay to see how
popular they are and how much profit you can
make from each unit.
If
they prove popular and sell for a good profit,
enquire about the minimum order quantities and
consider placing an order. If the MOQs are not
too high and everything appears genuine, place
the order and take delivery of the stock. Bear
in mind you will need to consider the shipping
costs as part of your expenses that ultimately
help you decide your retail price and profit
margin.
Start
selling them on eBay, also consider offering
them at trade rate to other sellers to buy off
you and put in place your own MOQ. Whilst they
will then often sell them in competition to
you, there is still a good business and profit
in just selling the items onto other companies
in bulk and letting them sell the goods to the
public.
Whilst
your profit margins will be lower via this method,
they will buy larger volumes off you compared
to a member of the public who will typically
just buy the one. Grow your business slowly,
develop your relationship with the Chinese suppliers
and you could see an excellent level of ongoing
profit from your business activities within
this sector.
